FEATURED STORY
EVERY CHILD CAN RIDE
For many kids, learning to ride a bike is a childhood milestone. But not every child has access to a bike—or the opportunity and confidence to learn.

That’s the idea behind Every Child Can Ride, a GEF-funded program that brought 50 bikes and additional training equipment into District 34 schools, giving young students the chance to learn bike safety, balance, steering and braking as part of their school day. Along the way, they’re learning something even bigger: persistence, independence and the confidence that comes when something that once felt impossible suddenly clicks.

For teacher Julie Hock, the impact has been unforgettable. “This bike program has been the highlight of my career. Teaching over 25 years... this is what I will take as my memory of being a teacher.”

Families are seeing that impact extend far beyond school, too. One parent shared that after refusing to ride for two years, her child came home “in LOVE with her bike,” opening the door to a summer of family bike rides together.

It’s more than learning to ride. It’s confidence, independence, healthy habits—and a skill students can carry with them for life.

That’s what a GEF grant can do.
